Benn-Haddin-Johnson fiasco - The video

Code of conduct : The Benn-Haddin-Johnson fiasco

During the first over after lunch on day two of the Perth test in the Frank Worrell Trophy featuring Australia v West Indies, Suleiman Benn, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson got into a fracas. The sequence of events, which you can see in the video on YouTube, was approximately this:

• Haddin plays a ball towards mid wicket and sees the possibility of a quick single
  
• Benn, bowling from around the wicket, runs across to his right to cut off the single
  
• Johnson put his head down and ran, reviving memories of Forrest Gump
  
• Benn tries to get to the ball, and ends up looking like he was dragging Johnson back with his hand
  
• When the ball is 'dead', Haddin points his bat at Benn possibly asking him to stop coming in the way
  
• Benn is now really mad and keeps chattering & abusing away
  
• Gayle is standing still, first listening to Haddin's point of view and then to Benn
  
• Umpire Billy Bowden then steps in and asks Gayle & Benn to get on with it
  
• Benn, still very angry, asks Haddin some questions, throwing in a couple of obscenities rhyming with 'chuck'
  
• Benn then bowls an absolute ripper of a delivery that Johnson has no clue about. The batsmen cross over for a bye
  
• Benn is still unhappy and chattering away. He even appears to ask Johnson something, while Johnson practices his straight drive at the non-striker's end
  
• Benn bowls to Haddin, who drives the ball straight back. Benn threatens to throw the ball back (unsure if he was threatening to hit Haddin or the stumps) and Haddin provides a view of his stumps, requesting him to take a shot
  
• That was the last ball of the over. Haddin walks down the pitch grinning and saying something to Benn
  
• Benn tries to point out something to Haddin with his hand and accidentally brushes against Johnson
  
• Johnson pushes Benn away
  
• Bowden finally realizes things could be going from bad to worse and steps in

Purely going by what was seen on TV, there were multiple people at fault here:

• Benn - He had no business tugging at Johnson's shirt and trying to drag him back
  
• Haddin - He had no business pointing his bat and interfering with something that Benn & Johnson should have (and could have) sorted out between themselves
  
• Johnson - He can't be blamed too much because it is unlikely he would have realized that Benn brushing him was accidental. But given the heated situation at that time, pushing Benn away was a bad choice
  
• Bowden & Gould - The umpires are the biggest culprits here. The moment it seemed like Benn & Haddin were in a war of words, they should have stepped in and called a halt to the verbal warfare. They didn't, couldn't, or chose not to. Then, when Johnson pushed Benn away, Bowden was almost apologetically pleading with the players to move on. All this while, Gould, the square-leg umpire, was conspicuously absent, probably day-dreaming about the sumptuous lunch he had just finished

A couple of aspects of today's incident are interesting, and give me a huge sense of deja vu.

Symonds v/s Harbhajan at Sydney in early 2008: Harbhajan patted Lee on the back and Symonds, standing quite far away from the scene of action, stepped in quite unwarrantedly to save his mate's arse from Harbhajan.

Today, Benn ran into Johnson and Haddin batted on Johnson's behalf.

A couple of years ago, during the 2nd final of the triangular ODI series in Australia, Michael Clarke, the bowler, nearly pulled down Sachin Tendulkar's pants in order to prevent Tendulkar, at the non-striker's end, from taking a single.

There was no sign of any apology from Clarke, because he was only doing it hoping that Tendulkar's greatness would have 'rubbed off' on him. Tendulkar also seems to have rather enjoyed the fondling. Gautam Gambhir, who played the shot, did nothing. Of course, it is quite likely that this unwarranted & deliberate physical contact, and the absence of any action around it, 'inspired' him to try a similar stunt a year later.

Today, Haddin couldn't keep quiet, and had to intervene. An issue that could have been sorted out in a few seconds dragged on and on. It's quite likely that there will be follow-ups over the next 3 days of the test.

Benn has now been charged with a Level 2 offence while Haddin & Johnson have been charged with Level 1 offences under the ICC's code of conduct for players.

Clause 2.2.4 refers to "Inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between Players in the course of play during an International Match".

If Benn's physical contact (the act of tugging at Johnson, for I am unaware of any other deliberate/inappropriate physical contact) was wrong, Johnson is also guilty of pushing Benn away.

Haddin would be guilty under 2.1.4 (Using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting) or 2.1.8 (conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game or brings the game into disrepute). I don't think he should be charged with a Level 2 offence because he only brandished his bat (admittedly, that did sort of make the whole incident a lot worse than it could have been) and almost definitely needled Benn.

Am I surprised that Haddin & Johnson are likely to get away with a lesser charge laid against them? Of course, not! We know by now who gets away with it.

Benn should actually feel proud that the Australians seem to be targetting him now. That usually happens to combustible folks who're doing well against the Aussies.

On a related note, Malcolm Conn's ghost-writer has once again forgotten to use the magic phrase "India have been the worst-behaved team in cricket over the last decade" in his latest piece.

The Steve Waugh Article - Australia v New Zealand - Final

Once again, it's Australia who enter a tournament final as firm favourites, against New Zealand. We've heard of other teams going past them in rankings and statistics, but when it comes to the big tournaments, Australia are still the team to beat.

The Australia we saw on Friday even was a far cry from the tired, fatigued outfit we saw against West Indies in the opening game. In the semifinal against England, the batting of Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson was really exceptional, and proved two things. First, Ponting has not lost his hunger and ambition to save his best knocks for the biggest arena. Second, that Shane Watson is remarkably well-suited for the opening slot, and is a quality player, when fit. This knock would have greatly boosted his confidence and hopefully this will ensure stability at the top of the order.

Perhaps the West Indies game was a wake-up call, but even against Pakistan, the game went too close to the wire for Australia's liking. However, they did enough to make the seminfals and now have some serious momentum going into the final.

Their other finalist has also been pretty impressive through the tournament. I have always been impressed by how well the New Zealand team performs as a unit. They are a tight, well-knit team that plans well and strategises meticulously for every game. This was in evidence yesterday in the way they first unsettled the Pakistan side with their sharp running between the wickets, and later by the way they used their batting powerplay. Daniel Vettori has been a good leader and it helps that he has some very good batsmen in the top order, namely Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor. I was also impressed with Elliot, who along with Vettori, got their side into the finals with a very balanced and no-fuss attitude.

The big shot in the arm for New Zealand has been the return of Shane Bond from ICL exile. He has given their pace bowling some teeth, and along with Ian Butler forms a very effective pace attack. I had seen Butler as a youngster, and it's good to see him finally realize the potential he had shown.

On Monday, New Zealand will have to once again try and unsettle the Australians by hustling them with good aggressive fielding and sharp running between the wickets. They are a side that make a large number of semifinals, but rarely go beyond. This makes them the underdogs tomorrow, since there is no denying that Australia save their best for the big games.

The Australians will try and see off the in-form Vettori and take on some of the other bowlers. I would imagine that the Australians will target taking around 40 off his 10 overs of left-arm spin. The defending champions have more experience and form in their bowling, and the fate of the game could be decided by how the New Zealand openers fare against Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle. The final of the Champions trophy will be played between the two traditional Trans-Tasman rivals as Australia and New Zealand go up against each other here in centurion on Monday. Both teams have made good use of the South Africans conditions en route to the finals and have been very steady in their run. Both captains have praised this edition of the tournament. Australian captain Ricky Ponting was particularly lavish in his praise. “I think it’s been an excellent tournament. It’s been very rushed for us and England, coming in as late as we did. But this has certainly been the best and most enjoyable Champions Trophy that I’ve played in. To have the best eight teams, over a shorter period of time, people in this country and all over the world have enjoyed the one-day cricket played over the last couple of weeks. These events are about showcasing the game, and I think the ICC and the players have done a terrific job of making this tournament a spectacle for the 50-over game.” he said. Daniel Vettori in addition warned against an overkill of ODIs and believed this is where this tournament was particularly successful. He agreed with Ponting and believed that the USP of the current edition was its short format and the standard of cricket. Now the onus is on both teams to end the tournament on a high and give the fans a spectacular game of cricket in the finals.

There are no clear favorites in the match as both teams have defied critics and have been very consistent in executing their plans especially New Zealand who have sustained their winning streak despite injuries to some big players like Oram and Ryder. Grant Elliot was inspirational in the semis shrugging of an injury scare in the pre-match and scoring a match-winning knock for his country. The Kiwi captain- a Delhi daredevil- Dan Vettori has been both natural with the ball and defiant with the bat. He is been a loyal servant of NZ cricket for a decade now; Winning the champions trophy as captain will be the ultimate high for the champion bowler. For Australia, Shane Watson has come to the party with both bat and ball and their captain- one of the best batsmen in ODI cricket- is in blistering form. Michael Hussey is the ace of spades as he has been uncannily away from spotlight this whole cricketing season. The final is the right platform for him to remind the world of his abilities. In terms of motivation, there is big contrast for the teams, Winning big tournaments is a way of life for erstwhile and the current Australian team and it goes without saying that they would like to keep it this way. For New Zealand, it’s a day of reckoning and history beckons them to finally oblige themselves with some long overdue cricketing glory. So all my fellow cricket fans not to forget my fellow 6UP fans, brace yourselves for a cracker!

Australia v England – 1st semi-final

The Champions trophy reaches its final stage as Australia and England face-off in the first semi-final today at Centurion. Buoyed by the recent hammering of England in their bilateral series, Australia will be confident enough to pull another one on their traditional rivals. The camp must be rejuvenated after winning a last ball thriller against Pakistan though the batting is still a concern for Coach Tim Nielsen. Vice-Captain Michael Clarke’s absence due to injury is a major blow but replacement David Hussey is a proven match-winner. Master batsman Ricky Ponting and young wicket-keeper batsman Tim Paine are in sublime touch and English seamers will be wary of them. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori had pointed out familiarity helped them beat Sri Lanka. England and Australia will look for the same after playing two months of cricket against each other in the English summer. The Aussies will also be hoping that Left arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson will add to the performances that got him the ICC player of the year award last night. Michael Hussey and Brett Lee would do well to prove the theory “Big Players for Big games”. In addition, Shane Watson and Cameron White have largely remained dormant and will be itching to fire. In short, the English surely have their hands full.

England having started with a bang have fizzled out a little, losing their final game cheaply to the Kiwis and also due to the doubt surrounding their top performer Stuart Broad. But observers the world over including yours truly knows better than to write them off the second time in the tournament. The pitch in the New Zealand game was tricky otherwise the English batsmen have been nothing short of explosive throughout the tournament. Paul Collingwood is a man on a mission with able deputies in Owais Shah and Eion Morgan. Andrew Strauss could be the dark horse as a batsman specially after tormenting the Aussies throughout the summer. Ryan Sidebottom and James Anderson will be looking to grab the big stage. What will make or break it for the English though, will be the performance of Off-spinner Graeme Swann and if he can control overs 20-40. The ever so shrewd Ricky Ponting summed it up aptly in the pre-match, “England is playing some pretty good cricket of late, but we know their strengths and weaknesses and have been able to exploit them in the past. Now it is a matter of doing that again”. On that note, let’s brace ourselves for the 1st semi-final!

The Indians know that even a huge win against the West Indies, which is almost mandatory considering the run-rate factor; will not guarantee them the semi-final spot. A lot depends on Pakistan’s game against the Aussies. On India’s part, they should be looking to field first so that should the Aussies lose to Pakistan, the Indian batters will have an exact target to get into the semis; having said that Aussies don’t often lose 50-over big games! History has taught them to find different ways to win. On current form and with their seasoned spin arsenal, Pakistan is the one team who can beat the transitional Australian team. Last night, the Kiwis kept their heads and left no scope for drama as they beat England putting the Sri Lankan aspirations firmly to rest. India will be hoping Wednesday brings a different outcome for them. Among all this West Indies have the perfect opportunity to become the party poopers for India!

The present scenario has led to a lot of friendly back-handed banter between the arch rivals. Skipper Dhoni, however, is an unenviable position as it must be very odd for an Indian captain to depend on a Pakistani team to go through a big ICC tournament having lost to them in the group stage. But this scenario is partially unfortunate as the wash-out in the Australia game complicated matters for India. Skipper Younis Khan has all the reasons to be smirking inside yet he was refreshingly friendly and charitable to India in his comments before the match. However, being a shrewd cricketer he knows he can’t discount the Aussies by a long shot. “I wish for India to play in the final against us but we will not worry about that in our game tomorrow. We’ll be trying our best. My wish is to win against the top teams, like South Africa, Australia and India. There is nothing in my mind about losing to Australia, and whether India will be out. How can I play 6UP?

SMS:
Simply make your prediction for the 6-ball combination for an over (for example: 042011), key it into your mobile and SMS it. Just make sure you send your sms before the first ball 0f an over is bowled. It's that easy.

What format do I need to send in my prediction?

You need to send your prediction in the form of a numeric input (six digits and no alphabetics). For example: 003624 (that is, zero runs for first two balls, three runs for the third ball, six for the fourth, two for the fifth, four for the sixth).

If a wicket falls, you have to predict the runs from that delivery. For example, if the batsman is clean bowled, the runs scored will be ZERO (0); if the batsman is run out and 1 valid run was scored on that ball, then you have to predict ONE (1) run for that ball.

If a prediction is received for less than 6 balls the system will assume Zero (0) runs for the missing balls. Similarly, if a customer sends a blank message the system will assume Zero (0) runs for all the six balls of that over.

Players can only predict for valid balls bowled in an over. Any ball that causes another ball to be bowled is not counted for this game. So any scores that result from wides and no balls are not counted.

Predictions can be sent via SMS.

Where can I play 6UP?

You can play 6UP from anywhere within your carrier's mobile coverage area. You should consult their coverage map for this. This means that you can play from the match venue, while watching a live broadcast on TV or while listening to a broadcast on the radio. And, of course, you don't even need to be watching or listening to play.

How much do I pay for each prediction?

Playing via SMS Rs 5 is charged for each prediction.

How many predictions can I send?
You can send a maximum of 20 predictions per innings. You can consume all of your allotted 20 predictions in one over or you can use that for multiple overs in a particular innings. You cannot carry forward unused predictions for a particular innings to another innings/match Predictions can be sent via SMS on short code 54466

How much do I win?

If you get the first 6, 5, 4 or Runs Per Over (RPO) correct, here's what you win/share:
6 VALID BALLS
You win/share 100 per cent of the playing Rs prize.

FIRST 5 VALID BALLS (if no one wins 6 valid balls)
You win/share 40 per cent of the playing Rs prize. (60 per cent rolls over to the next over)
FIRST 4 VALID BALLS (if no one wins 6 or the first 5 valid balls)
You win/share 30 per cent of the playing Rs prize.

CORRECT RUNS PER OVER (if no one wins 6, the first 5 or 4 valid balls)
You win/share 20 per cent of the playing Rs prize. If there are no winners, the Rs prize keeps rolling over into the next over — until someone wins.

How big is the Rs prize for an over?

All overs start at a minimum of Rs10,000 and grow based on the amount of people playing in an over.

How do I collect winnings?

All winners will receive a WIN SMS from 6UP for each win.
If the total winning amounts from all your wins are up to and including Rs1,000, then we will buy a credit on your account (prepaid or postpaid) for you from your mobile phone operator. For total winnings greater than Rs.1000, 6UP will contact winners to collect detailed contact information and PAN. Once all of these details are received and verified, a cheque will be produced (comprising of the winning amount less the applicable taxes) and sent to a pickup-point specified by 6UP. The winner must produce their PAN card (original) and a photocopy of their PAN card to collect the cheque. Note for winnings of Rs.5000 and over we withhold at least the 30.9% for TDS as required by law.

All entitled winners will receive their prize(s) within 90 days o/f the date of their win. Should a winner not receive his/her prize within this time then he/she should contact 6UP directly by email at 6up@iplayup.in.

What if the over isn't bowled?
There are a number of reasons why an over may not be bowled. Rain may stop play, the batting side may be all out, or the batting side may win the match before the 20th over in a T/20 game or before the 50th over in the ODI.

Entries into these overs will not playable.

How do I know if I have won?

If you're a winner we'll sms you with a win code letting you know exactly how much you've won and how to collect. If the win amount is less than Rs1000, then the total win amount will be credited with talk time to your phone account.

Is there a cut-off time for a play?

Yes there is. You have to send in your predictions for a particular over early enough for us to receive the SMS and process the entry before the bowler rolls over his arm to bowl the first ball of that particular over. Note that TV broadcasts are delayed from the actual game, so you are advised to get your entry in well before the start of the over.

If your prediction is received after the cut-off time of an over, your entry will be accepted for the next over of the game.
